They have been inspected. The obverse of the 1848 medal says, "Immigration Swelled by Famine and Revolution" across the top. The middle has a portrait of a man and woman standing with a ship in the background. Below the portrait is the date "1848". The reverse has 1848 on the top and says, "Irish famine of 1846, German famine of 1847, and the Revolution of 1848 causes increase in immigration to U.S.; JAN. 24 - Gold discovered in California; JULY 4 - End of war with Mexico formally proclaimed; NOV. 7 - Zachary Taylor elected president". The obverse of the 1849 medal says, "Forty-Niners Seek El Dorado in California" across the top. In the middle is a portrait of men panning and digging for gold. Below the portrait is the date, "1849". The reverse has 1849 written on the top and says, "California gold rush draws thousands of gold rush seekers from the East; MAR. 3 - Department of the Interior created; MAR. 5 - Inauguration of Zachary Taylor as President; FALL - California convention approves a new constitution prohibiting slavery and ratifies it by popular vote".
