Description: This is a miniature plate made by Franciscan, England (Wedgwood), as part of the Plates of the World's Great Porcelain Houses collection. It is decorated with the Desert Rose pattern and measures approximately 8.8cm in diameter. It is in excellent condition with no crazing, staining, chips, cracks or repairs. The inspiration for Franciscan's Desert Rose dinnerware has been attributed to Annette Honeywell, a California freelance artist. Based on Honeywell's designs, Franciscan artist Mary Winans modeled the Desert Rose tableware design that would go on to be touted as "the most popular pattern ever made in America". Desert Rose china stopped being produced by Franciscan in the 1980s due to increasing costs of raw materials and production. Franciscan Ceramics was sold to Josiah Wedgwood and Sons Ltd and production of Desert Rose was moved to England. In 1982 the Franklin Mint reps traveled throughout the world persuading the most famous porcelain houses to become part of this collection. Each of the 25 houses has created a mini plate solely and exclusively for this collection. Their artists have designed and produced the plates to capture the tradition of porcelain house.
