She was the daughter of Henry II of Albret, King of Navarre, and Margaret of Angoulême. Queen of Navarre: Joan became Queen of Navarre upon her father's death in 1555. Navarre was a small kingdom situated between France and Spain. Religious Beliefs: Joan of Albret became an early supporter of the Protestant Reformation. She converted to Calvinism, a form of Protestantism associated with the teachings of John Calvin. Religious Tolerance: Joan aimed for religious tolerance within her realm and issued the Edict of Saint-Germain in 1560, granting religious freedom to the Huguenots (French Calvinists) in Navarre. Henry IV played a crucial role in the Wars of Religion in France and was known for issuing the Edict of Nantes in 1598, granting religious tolerance to Protestants. Her son, Henry, became a central figure in these wars. Death: Joan of Albret died on June 9, 1572, in Paris, France. Her death occurred shortly before the St. Bartholomew's Day Massacre, a violent event during the Wars of Religion.Joan of Albret is remembered for her early support of the Protestant Reformation, her efforts to promote religious tolerance, and her role as the mother of Henry IV of France.
