Charles Elcock (1834-1910) was a professional microscope slide maker, operating from Belfast, Ireland between ca. 1880 and the first decade of the twentieth century. He specialised in mounting foraminifera, producing slides that are both scientifically useful and aesthetically pleasing. In 1879, he won an award from the Belfast Naturalists’ Field Club for his Foraminifera mounts that illustrated a great variety of species, and several excellent methods of mounting, of artistic skill and superior finish. Elcock wrote two extensive articles on “How to prepare foraminifera” for the inaugural volume of The Journal of the Postal Microscopical Society.
