No date, but based on the style of binding I believe the book was probably printed in the 1850s or 1860s. It is a reprint edition of the French novel which first appeared in the USA in 1844. This publisher printed books between 1896 and 1898. The book in the same format is seen with the International Book Company a precursor with books printed between 1890 and 1896. The Wandering Jew was a serially published novel, which attained great popularity in Paris, and beyond. According to historian John McGreevy, the novel was intensely and deliberately "anti-Catholic". From Wikipedia: Marie-Joseph "Eugène" Sue (26 January 1804 – 3 August 1857) was a French novelist. He was one of several authors who popularized the genre of the serial novel in France with his very popular and widely imitated The Mysteries of Paris, which was published in a newspaper from 1842 to 1843. In The Wandering Jew two figures cry out to each other across the Bering Straits. One is the Wandering Jew, the other his sister, Hérodiade. Wherever the Wandering Jew goes, the cholera epidemic follows in his wake. The siblings are condemned to wander the earth until the entire Rennepont family has disappeared from the earth, as Hérodiade's descendants are also the descendants of Marius de Rennepont, Huguenots persecuted under Louis XIV by the Jesuits. The siblings are compelled to eternally protect that family. DESCRIPTION: 496 pages 7 1/2 x 5 1/8 inches embossed cloth hardcover CONDITION: Good Condition. There has been no restoration done to this book. It is bound in maroon embossed cloth. The spine is faded and spine ends are frayed. Corners and edges are a little worn. All hinges and joints are intact. The front endpapers show some grubbiness and there is a half in tear in the outer edge of the first two front endpapers.. The pages show some age toning, and there is a small water stain in the outer margin of the first half of the book. All original pages, endpapers, etc. are present with the book.
