Georgia O'Keeffe, who lived from 1887---1986, was born in Wisconsin but grew up in Williamsburg, Virginia. She was a modernist painter whose career spanned seven decades. Called the "Mother of American modernism, O'Keeffe gained international recognition for her meticulous painting of natural forms, particularly flowers and desert-inspired landscapes which were often drawn from the places she lived. In 1905, she studied at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and then became a teacher. In 1915, she met Alfred Stieglitz, an art dealer who began exhibiting her work in NEW YORK CITY. The couple married in 1924. O'Keeffe created many forms of abstract art, including close-ups of flowers, such as the RED CANNA paintings, that many found to represent vulvas---though O'Keeffe consistently denied that intention. In 1929, she began spending part of the year in New Mexico as a guest of Mable Dodge Luhan and this setting provided the inspiration for her images of animal skulls, such as COW'S SKULL. In 1938, she was awarded an honorary doctor of fine arts degree by the College of William and Mary, the first of many honors. In 1939, O'Keeffe painted in Hawaii as guest of the Dole Pineapple Company. In 1940, she purchased Ghost Ranch near Santa Fe and began spending about six months there yearly. After Steiglitz's death in 1946, she moved to her Ghost Ranch and lived there until 1984 when she moved to Santa Fe and lived with Juan Hamilton and his family until her death. Hamilton had worked with O'Keeffe at Ghost Ranch in 1973. In 2014 her painting of JIMSON WEED/WHITE FLOWER No. 1 sold for $44,405,000---at the time, by far the largest price paid for any painting by a female artist. Following her death the GEORGIA O'KEEFFE MUSEUM was established in Santa Fe. 160 Folio sized pages----a GORGEOUS book--- including a Chronology and an Index.
