It was published in October 1990.About the Title. Though it appropriately refers to the Dragon Knights of Taladas, one must admit that "Dragon Knight" is a pretty generic title. In fact, it's so generic that Wizards of the Coast reused it fifteen laters for the totally unrelated Dragon Knight (2005), the seventh novel in their young-readers series of Dragonlance: The New Adventures (2004-2010), set just after the Dragonlance Chronicles (1984-1986).Origins: A Change for the Taladas Trilogy. Eight months passed between the publication of DLA1: "Dragon Dawn" (1990), the first adventure in the Taladas adventure trilogy, and DLA2: "Dragon Knight" (1990), the second. When the Taladas adventure trilogy finally returned, it had a new author: Rick Swan.Swan had previously authored the "DLE" adventures (1989), but was somewhat controversial among fans. That's in part because he was writing somewhat gonzo adventures, which were not necessarily in tune with the core of Dragonlance's storytelling, and it part because the "DLE" adventures had canonicity problems — though that was pretty common during the second wave of Dragonlance publication.Rick Swan would finish out the Taladas trilogy. Though he did travel to the planes with DLA3: "Dragon's Rest" (1990), there aren't as many canon complaints about these two adventures as there were with Swan's previous efforts.Adventure Tropes. "Dragon Knight" does its best to maintain the story focus of its predecessor without the railroading. Swan does that by giving his adventure a beginning and an end, and laying out the rest as a hex crawl. Through the crawl, players can visit numerous small locations as well as the three major chapters of the book. This style of play is a nice match for some of the early Dragonlance adventures, such as DL1: "Dragons of Despair" (1984). Those individual chapters are also largely sandboxes, while roleplaying interludes are sometimes laid out with Q&A that help the GM address queries that the players might have.Exploring Krynn. There's another big map in "Dragon Knight", zooming in on the Taladas continental map in Time of the Dragon (1989) and covering the "Southern Steamwall Region". Parts of the adventure take place in Gridmore, Pirim, Sargohgg, Ahhar, Kor Island, and across the rest of the well-described Southern Steamwall.About the Creators. Swan was one of the main authors for Dragonlance in the years immediately following the departure of Weis and Hickman. That started with contributions to DL15: "Mists of Krynn" (1988) and continued through the "DLE" series (1989) and now the "DLA" series (1990). However, DLA3: "Dragon's Rest" (1990) would be his last work for the setting.
