Description: On July 17, 1955 Disneyland opened its gates to a select number of guests: studio employees, construction workers, company sponsor officials, and the press - along with their families - in what was called the “International Press Preview and Dedication” ceremony. Most everyone knows that almost anything that could go wrong that first day did; but what isn’t common knowledge is that the official opening day for the Park was supposed to be July 18, 1955 when the first paying guests were to enter the Park. Instead, in addition to invited guests a slew of counterfeit tickets were used and the uninvited mingled with the invited. Since the whole “Grand Opening” event was televised live on ABC in a 90 minute special, the July 17th date stuck as the official opening date of Disneyland. In 2010, for Disneyland’s 55th Anniversary that momentous occasion was memorialized with 1,955 Limited Edition Press Kits consisting of some replicas of the items issued to the press, including an invitation letter signed by Walt Disney, an admission ticket for the member of the press, a child’s ticket and an additional adult’s ticket, both allowing admission to the park and access to all the rides and attractions, a parking pass, a pocket-size notebook and pen (what reporter worth his salt wouldn’t have one of these), and the cardboard separating the front and back of the pouch is actually a pocket folder - the better to store your replicas. Both the adult and child ticket have a copy of Walt’s signature on the back. The more modern addition is a pin trader’s lanyard with a plastic passport holder and seven iconic pins: three are duplicates in miniature of the original admission tickets; a gold-tone pin of Sleeping Beauty’s Castle; Tinkerbell as she was seen each Sunday during the opening scene of the TV show “Disneyland”; a 50s-style head of Mickey; and Band Leader Mickey standing next to the Disneyland marquee. The back of each pin has several imprints: ‘Limited Edition of 1955’; ‘Disney China’; the official Pin Trading mark; and the ‘Dateline Disneyland 1955’ logo. The lanyard is printed with an early Disneyland pattern and the passport holder has the “Dateline Disneyland 1955” design printed on the front and the Disneyland Pin Trading mark on the back. A list of all included items completes the package, which is enclosed in a sturdy 12” x 9 3/4” snap pouch. The press kit has been stored unopened for over 20 years, and has some slight indenting where the lanyard and pins have pressed against the cardboard, but with that exception is in the same excellent condition as the day it was purchased; it would make a wonderful addition to any Disney enthusiast’s collection. PLEASE NOTE: If you wish to purchase other items at the same time please advise me that you would like combined shipping before making payment so that I can determine the shipping fees and if one package is feasible.
