Description: Union General Fitz John Porter is credited with saving the Federal Army at The Battle of 2nd Manassas- knowing Longstreet's Division was in his front, he delayed the attack ordered by General John Pope. John Pope was outraged and relieved him of his command. Porter was Courtmartialed for disobedience and misconduct and was dismissed from the Army. Postwar Confederate Colonel EP Alexander, who respected Porter's conduct, considered his dismissal to be a Confederate victory. But the government refused Porter's efforts for a commission to investigate his dismissal until 1878 when he was found not guilty and restored to service- The Commission Chairman John Schofeld stated that Porter's action probably saved Pope's Army of Virginia from annihilation. An Original Civil War War Department General Order, dated January 22, 1863 charging General Porter with failure to obey orders , detailing the order by General Pope, issued at Centreville, Virginia to Porter at Warrenton Junction and charges against Porter .
