Sarreguemines earthenware is a ceramic production that developed from 1790 to 2007 in the French town of Sarreguemines. In two centuries, the small family industry born during the Revolution has come a long way. Many fans of these cheerful and colourful pieces are scattered all over the world. Paul Utzschneider, then his son-in-law Alexandre de Geiger and the latter's son, Paul de Geiger, real one-man bands, propelled the small town to the very forefront of the earthenware industry: from the 19th century, Sarreguemines offered a vast collection of earthenware, vases, flowerpots, wall frescoes, fireplaces, etc. throughout the world. The activity began in 1790. Nicolas-Henri Jacobi and two other partners set up the first factory1. However, the economic situation was not very favourable. Jacobi then bought an oil mill which he transformed into a pebbling mill located on the banks of the river, but his goodwill was not enough: the difficulties in supplying raw materials, the hostility and distrust of the inhabitants, the competition from English and French factories and the troubles of the Revolution pushed Jacobi to give up the place.
