Description: "The World on Mercator's Projection."An attractive map of the World, as it was known in the middle of the 19th century, with a decorative border. The map lacks an imprint but it is undoubtedly the work of John Rapkin who produced a series of similar designs for Tallis's "Illustrated Atlas" between 1845 - 1851. This example has two folds, so it may have come from another volume, perhaps Wright's "Universal Pronouncing Dictionary" c1850. Whatever the source, this is a very decorative map with interesting detail. By the time it was published Australia had been fully surveyed, but clearly the Poles were still unexplored. There are hints of land in the Antarctic, whilst only half of the NW Passage above Canada has been mapped. What is now Alaska is marked here as "Russian America." It was sold to the States in 1867 for $7.2 million - a sale, no doubt, that Russia now regrets! With its attractive decorative border, this map would frame up nicely. Size: the sheet measures approx. 38cms x 29cms.Condition: 2 folds, as issued. Missing a little in the margin top right, not affecting the map or the decorative border. A few small creases but generally this map is in a good condition, with strong, possibly later handcolouring. Please study my photographs. Postage: £4.75 within the UK. £12.00 to Europe, £18.00 to USA etc.I have other antique maps, books, prints etc. in my ebay shop - please see my other items.
