Description: The #4 bell is easily the hardest to find from the Holstein mint labeled set. Production circa 1900. See the flyer and price list for a little piece of history. Perfect for the collector of Blum's (pronounced Bloom's) bells who is in need of the hardest to find #4 size. Many Blum cowbells are today missing their original labels. Blum stock bells are made of sheet steel and have a recognizable patented form. Blum stock bells were made from sheet steel, cut with a flat pattern or “die” much as a garment is cut from cloth. The words “Die and former for shaping patented” on the Holstein bell labels refers to this part of the process. After being cut from the steel, the bell was curved around the “former”, which gave it its form or shape, and was then riveted along each side. The Blum Cowbell Factory in Collinsville was founded in about 1876 by Christian Gottlob Blum, who died in 1912. His son John Henry Blum, joined the business and operated it for 50 years. At the time of John's death, the Blum Manufacturing Co. was one of three cow bell factories in the country. John Blum died in July 1935, leaving his wife, Martha, a son, John Henry Blum Jr., and d daughter, Mrs. William Blumberg. He was buried in the Lutheran Cemetery in Collinsville. John Henry Blum Jr. continued the business until closing in 1956. #CowBell #FarmBell #BarnSalvage #Industrial Decor #PrimitiveDecor
