They call it a 4-6-4 because the engine has four pilot wheels in front, followed by six driving wheels and then four trailing truck wheels. The pilot wheels guide the locomotive into curves and switches so that it will not go off the track. The big powerful driving wheels make the engine go so that it can pull the whole train. The other four wheels support the rear part of the locomotive. Look at the page in the back of this book "Parts of a Locomotive," to see how the locomotive works. All pictures are of the actual item.
