Manuel Joachim De Franca was the first born son of a successful wine merchant from the island of Madeira, Portugal who sent him to Lisbon for his education. He studied art in Royal Art Academy, the school founded by Francisco Goya( 1746-1828). In 1828 he joined the revolt against absolutist policies of the Don Miguel government and after the government forces suppressed the rebellion De Franca was imprisoned and sentenced to death along with many of his compatriots. Later sympathizers arranged their escape and smuggled them on a ship bound to Philadelphia. The young man befriended the American landscape artist Joshua Shaw (1777-1860) and De Franca later studied with Thomas sully one of the finest portrait artists in America. He eventually settled in St. Louis, Missouri in 1844 and became the city's most popular portrait artist. A very similar painting of Derrick January, a prominent wholesale grocer living in St. Louis at the time is now located in Fyvie Castle on loan from the National Trust for Scotland. His work can be found in the following:Addison Gallery of American Art/ Brooklyn Museum/ Chicago Historical Society/ Missouri Historical Society/ New York State Historical Association/ Virginia Historical Society/ National Portrait Gallery, Smithsonian American Art museum and numerous private's collections. From Sybil: "The burning of the Hayricks on the Abbey Farm" (smoke in back ground)"Lord Marney, who was fond of chess, turned out Captain Grouse and very gallantly proposed to finish his game with miss Poinsett, which miss Poinsett who understood Lord Marney as well as he understood chess" (Chess book) History of England book and Blackstone's Commentaries of the Laws of England to round it out. Postscript: Benjamin Disraeli never visited the United States in his lifetime, therefore a sitting most likely did not occur. Remember that this painting is dated 1849 well before he became Prime Minister of the United Kingdom in 1874. Here, in 1849 he is well known for his literary endeavors and in his early forties. You could always recognize Alfalfa of 'Our Gang' by his cowlick hair style and so was Disraeli recognized by his signature little curl on his forehead that he fashioned until his death. A newspaper article once was found during research from the 1840's time period that had an etching of the author which is was very close to his countenance in this painting.
