Description: Ah, COMDEX in the 90's! Heady times! Any signs of a dot-com bubble were years away (a couple, anyway), and the last thing that anyone was thinking about -- these endless marketing budgets and associated good times will go on forever! And so the tech companies flocked to Las Vegas for a week of hype, debauchery, hour-long cab lines, and maybe a few actual leads. And swag like the world has never seen. To wit, here we have a set of Ask Jeeves playing cards. Why playing cards? Why not? Or, I suppose, leverage the Vegas atmosphere a bit, and act as an affordable giveaway for the COMDEX faithful to take home to their Thursday night poker games. You can also plaster the Jeeves character on the jokers and face cards, and so maybe get a little extra brand recognition out of the deal. I can't say that these ultimately did much to help or hurt Ask Jeeves, and eventually the company became just "Ask", once it was clear that (among other things) a hundred-year old British valet maybe wasn't what the kids were looking for. Truth in advertising, here: The box and the cards are in fine shape, but the box has indeed been opened, and (gasp!) the plastic wrap is no more. But this is as it should be: The cards, never used, to be clear, are free to breathe, to skate across the table like the cards they are, and to show you and others what they really look like -- what do the numbered cards look like, and, more importantly, how many ways are there to work the Jeeves characters into the deck's face cards? (Answer: well, a few. Kinda what you'd expect.) So, yes, one of the first rules of collectibles has been violated here -- never break the plastic wrap -- but here, you have something that the other guys will never know -- what those cards REALLY look like! Touch them! Revel in your secret knowledge, and (gasp!) maybe even play a quick game of solitaire! I'll never tell, and you don't have to, either.
