Description: BRAHMS:"Klavierquartett #1 in G min, Op. 25" andSCHUMANN: "Fantasiestucke Op. 88" Argerich/Kremer/Bashmet/MasikyOriginal US release, 2002. <<$2 DOMESTIC SHIPPING>> ALBUM INFO: 29 July 2001 at the Verbier Festival in the Swiss Alps, when Martha Argerich, Gidon Kremer, Yuri Bashmet and Mischa Maisky performed Brahms's Piano Quartet in G minor op. 25. Much of this atmosphere was recaptured only a few months later for this release, in February 2002, when all four musicians reconvened in Berlin for the present studio recording of the work. Although the sessions were undoubtedly hard work, they also allowed the players to add a final artistic polish to the interpretative intensity of their performance the previous summer. Now the flames of tempestuously impetuous emotions are tempered to fascinating effect by textures that are coolly thought through and intellectually structured, notably in the weighty opening movement, which is laid out along the broadest lines and which seems here to be on the point of exploding with inner tension. Clearly conceived from a pianistic point of view, Brahms s rigorously realized compositional idea of a continuous development of the underlying motivic and thematic material leaves its mark on the whole of a movement that is no longer made up of individual, clearly circumscribed thematic blocks but is part of a continuous process, committed only to itself, within a familiar formal framework. Also includes Schumann's largely unknown Fantasiestücke op. 88, a coupling due only in part to the successful concerts given by the Argerich Kremer Maisky Trio in Wiesbaden and Lockenhaus in 2000. "The results are every bit as incandescent as you would expect with Argerich partnering such a stellar trio of string players ... It sounds like a concert performance; there is a perfectly focused energy and a sense of daring about every phrase. The sense of expressive give-and-take within the quartet seems almost subliminal ... Argerich s playing is crammed with vivid invention." --The Guardian, 23 January 2004 MARTHA ARGERICH pianoGIDON KREMER violinYURI BASHMET violaMISCHA MAISKY violoncello Full digital recording (DDD), 58:17 PRESSING INFO:This is a promotional U.S. copy*.
