Description: The Cat in the Hat is a 2003 traditionally 2D hand-drawn animated fantasy comedy film produced by Universal Feature Animation, DreamWorks Pictures, DreamWorks Animation, Imagimation, Amblimation, Fuzzy Door Productions and Valhalla Motion Pictures and produced, written and directed by Seth MacFarlane. Loosely based on the book of the same name by Dr. Seuss, it was the second feature-length animated Dr. Seuss adaptation by Amblimation and Seth MacFarlane after the 2000 holiday comedy film, How the Grinch Stole Christmas. The film is narrated by Keith David and stars the voices of Robin Williams, Billy Crystal, Dakota Fanning, Spencer Breslin, Alec Baldwin, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Sean Hayes and Seth MacFarlane.Production on the film began in 1997 with Tim Allen initially cast as the voice of the Cat, but he dropped his role due to work on The Santa Clause 2. In 2002, Jim Carrey was originally cast, but he refused due to casting issues, and the role was later given to Williams. While the basic plot parallels that of the book, the film filled out its 82 minutes by adding new subplots and characters significantly different from the original story. Walter Murphy composed the film's score. Released on November 21, 2003 in the United States, the film received mixed-to-positive reviews from critics who praised its story, animation, humor, Williams' portrayal of the title character, and Murphy's musical score but criticized both its lack of faithfulness to Dr. Seuss' original story and the profanity joke in the "Kupkake-inator" scene. The film became a box-office success, grossing $233 million worldwide against its $109 million budget and is warmly received by audiences. PlotWhen single mother Joan Walden is called back to work, she hires a babysitter to watch her siblings Conrad and Sally who are both imperfect. Conrad constantly does the exact opposite of what he is supposed to do and accidentally causes trouble while Sally becomes bossy and tries to be perfect. Their next door neighbor, Larry Quinn dreams of marrying Joan and sending her siblings to a military school to straighten up their behavior. When Joan leaves, Conrad and Sally's babysitter, Mrs. Kwan, falls asleep. Not long after, it starts to rain outside and the two kids get bored. When Conrad and Sally slowly start bickering, they hear something in the house and as they go to investigate, a human-sized cat named the Cat in the Hat appears. Freaked out by his size and sneakiness, Conrad and Sally realize that the Cat wants them to learn to have fun, but their pet fish tries to convince the Cat not to be around when Joan is away. The Cat convinces the kids to sign a contract which will allow them to have all the fun they want, and to prevent anything bad from happening. When Conrad and Sally are hungry for cupcakes, the Cat in the Hat spawns two clones, a host Cat and a chef Cat, who put on a cooking show (with him, the kids, and an assortment of animals as audience members) to present the Kupkake-Inator. When the chef Cat accidentally chops the fur off of his tail, the Cat then adds a drop of Fur Un-Balder onto his tail (as some of the injuries from his clones become part of his body when they cease to exist). Eventually, the three end up making cupcakes out of everything in the kitchen, but the cupcakes explode, creating a large purple gooey mess. The Cat tries to clean up the mess with Joan's dress, but Conrad and Sally unsuccessfully try to stop him. The Cat in the Hat then brings a large red crate into the house, opens it, and releases two screwball creatures named Thing 1 and Thing 2. Conrad and Sally are eager to open the crate again, but the Cat explains to them that the crate is a teleportation device to his own world, known as the Trans-Dimensional Teleportolator, and he warns them not to open it as the crate locks itself. As Things 1 and 2 proceed to mess around with the house, Conrad goes against the Cat's rules and sneakily opens the crate. The lock ends up on the collar of their dog, Nevins. Thing 1 and Thing 2 then throw Nevins out the window, just before Conrad and Sally catch them in a net. Sally fusses over the state of the house, but The Cat warns her (along with Conrad) that they have more important things to worry about... if they do not put the lock back on the crate in time, they will be in the middle of "the mother of all messes". The trio then puts the sleepy babysitter on top of the crate to buy some time and chase after Nevins. Meanwhile, Larry is revealed to be a rude, disgusting, unemployed couch potato who is too lazy to work for a living, and wishes to marry Joan for all of her money and to get her kids out of sight. He sees Nevins running through the street and seizes the opportunity to frame Conrad and Sally for being unable to take care of Nevins, just as his TV is being repossessed by a trio of Repo men, for not paying it since it was overdue and his credit card expired a long time ago. The Cat in the Hat leads Conrad and Sally to a birthday party they weren't invited to and disguises himself as a pinata (that looks just like him). Kids start hitting him with plastic bats, but a bigger kid with a wooden bat orders them to move out of his way. Sally predicts that it can't end well as the Cat frantically raises a white flag. The boy stands behind him and slams the Cat hard with the bat causing him to fly straight into the bush Conrad and Sally were hiding in. Conrad then secretly uses a Swiss Army knife to break the pinata causing the candies to fall out and the trio to scurry away before the other kids look inside the bushes and happily grab candy. Larry dognaps Nevins and heads for Joan's office. Conrad, Sally and the Cat catch up to Larry in a vehicle called the Super Luxurious Omnidirectional Whatchamajigger (SLOW), formerly known as the Furious Automobile of Speedajiggy Transporter (FAST), which ends up being destroyed in a crash as they head downtown. The Cat then tricks Larry into handing over Nevins and the crab lock by making him sign a petition with a large, oversized pen that requires two hands. Larry becomes furious and heads to Joan to tell her about the behavior of her kids. Realizing and remembering that the Things always do the opposite of whatever they are told, Conrad and Sally are able to get them to help the three get home, and stall Joan and Larry, by telling them not to do either. While the Things distract Joan and Larry, the trio get back home, unaware that the babysitter has fallen off the crate to answer a phone call from Joan. Because of this, all terror begins to break loose in the house as the crate erupts. An obsessed Larry decides to run to the house and tell Joan to meet him there. When Larry catches both Conrad and Sally at the doorway and takes them to the house, the Cat reappears. Larry stumbles backwards while sneezing (due to being allergic to cats), only to fall from a high cliff into the Cat's world. Conrad and Sally are surprised at what has happened to this house, being the "mother of all messes", just as the Cat had warned them before. After passing through the Cat's world, they find the crate and successfully close it. The house returns to normal, but it suddenly collapses. Sally berates the Cat for not fixing things, despite the fact that he was not responsible for this mess. The Cat admits that he planned the entire day (excluding the chef Cat cutting the fur off of his tail and Nevins being dognapped) and he even knew Conrad would open the crate, much to Sally's shock. The two kids order the Cat to leave. Dismayed, the Cat in the Hat states that he thought they wanted to have fun but Conrad angrily tells him that he doesn't know when enough is enough. The Cat then sadly leaves. Conrad and Sally become ready to face the consequences when Joan comes home, but just when it looked like this was the end of the road, much to their surprise, The Cat comes back with Thing 1, Thing 2 and a cleaning machine called the Dynamic Industrial Renovating Tractormajigger (DIRT). He explains that, when Conrad opened the crate, the contract became null and void, thus explaining why bad things happen on the contrary to prior agreement. However, he then explains that it would be reinstated if Conrad and Sally learned from their mistakes. The Cat cleans up the mess and puts everything in the house back together, much to the relief of Conrad and Sally, who then thank the Cat for everything. The Cat in the Hat and the Things then leave the house, just in time for Joan to come home. Mrs. Kwan wakes up and tells Joan that Conrad and Sally were "little angels from the sky", as she doesn't know anything about what happened since she was sound asleep the whole time. Larry barges in, covered from head to toe in purple goo and starts telling Joan about the mess and the Cat's world. He then tries to antagonize her kids, but Joan states that even though Conrad and Sally have a sibling rivalry in each other, they aren't exactly bad kids. Not believing Larry (as the Cat already cleaned the house before her arrival), Joan declines his proposal of marriage and instead sends him away for his actions, much to the disappointment of Larry but much to the victory of Conrad and Sally. Larry pleads for mercy but Joan closes the door on him. The Humberfloob party goes as scheduled and the film ends with a shot of the Cat and the Things happily walking away in the sunset and thinking about going on vacation.
