Description: OFFERED HERE FOR YOUR BIDDING PLEASURE IS THIS ANTIQUE PAIR OF WOOL CARDERS. THERE ARE NO MAKER'S MARKS. THEY COULD BE HAND MADE.CARDERS ARE NOW REALLY ONLY USED BY ARTISANS WISHING TO REPLICATE THE EARLY PRACTICES OF SMALL FARMERS. THE WOOL WAS COMBED BACK AND FORTH TO BOTH CLEAN IT AND AERATE IT...PART OF THE PROCESS TOWARDS SPINNING THE WOOL. CARDERS HAVE BEEN AROUND FOR CENTURIES AND CERTAINLY WERE USED THROUGH THE 19TH CENTURY AND LATER BY SMALL FARMERS.THE RECTANGULAR PART OF THE CARDER MEASURES 3 1/2 BY 5 1/2 INCHES. THE TOTAL LENGTH OF THE HANDLE PIECE IS 7 1/2 INCHES WITH 4 1/2 OF THAT EXTENDING BEYOND THE RECTANGULAR PART. THE CURVED SPIKES ARE ABOUT A QUARTER INCH IN LENGTH. THEY APPEAR TO BE QUITE RUSTY....THIS REALLY A SHOW PIECE RATHER THAN A FUNCTIONING ONE. HAPPY BIDDING!
