The metal is heated and hammered on the reverse side to create the raised pattern. This is the metalsmithing technique called repousse. It is a difficult technique and only expert silversmiths achieve it well. This Victorian bangle measures 3 1/8 in outside diameter and is 3/8 inch deep. The inside measurement is 2 1/2 inches across. It is in good condition overall for its age, it has a couple of dings and one small area where it is thinner due to regular wear. If you wear bangles you know what I mean. It has no breaks, it is not badly deformed. It is over 130 years old and has been loved. This antique bracelet is marked simply Sterling, with no maker's mark. We cleaned and hand polished but we do not dip antique silver jewelry, so there is some patina.
