Description: This exquisite cameo depicting Aphrodite in a chariot flying above the clouds is being pulled by birds. Aphrodite had three sacred birds - Doves, sparrows and swans. In the Greek poet Saphho’s “Ode to Aphrodite” she is described as riding in a chariot pulled by sparrows. The brooch is handmade and the carved cameo is crisp and detailed. The mythological theme of the brooch adds to its charm and appeal. This is a rare piece of vintage and antique jewelry that is sure to impress. The brooch measures approximate 2” by 1 1/2”. It is signed in two places inside the bezel - both marks appear to be the word sterling. The brooch also appears to be signed on the back of the shell by the maker.
