Description: Antique Staffordshire spaniel dog pair (damaged). - Staffordshire dog figurines are matching pairs of pottery spaniel dogs, standing guard, which were habitually placed on mantelpieces in 19th-century homes. Mainly manufactured in Staffordshire pottery, these earthenware figures were also made in other English counties and in Scotland. They are also known as hearth spaniels or fireplace dogs as they were positioned on top of the mantelpiece. Many other breeds were produced, particularly the greyhound, though the spaniels were especially popular and this is attributed to royalty favoring the King Charles Spaniel breed. - Classic style with deep moulding lines perfect for adding a timeless English aesthetic to any setting somewhat unusual for their large size. - Guaranteed authentic Victorian era dogs. Firing holes on back right for pieces of this age. - One dog is in good condition excepting surface wear to the hand painted details and crazing to the finish. The other dog has been broken into pieces at some point and glued back together. One piece towards the back is missing, leaving a hole. Despite these issues they are a charming pair with character perfect for someone who enjoys objects with a shabby elegance. See photos for more detail.
