The hand carvings here are exquisite and completely cover the cabinet and all six drawer fronts, both sides and the cabinet top as well…even the lower apron and the fluted feet are carved!! This style cabinet is often called a “Wellington chest”, after the first Duke of Wellington, a leading British military figure of the 19th century. These chests are typically tall, narrow, and feature a locking right front “flap” that covers the edges of the drawers and secures them locked and safe, even during military travel, thus also considered as “campaign furniture!” Quality throughout with dovetailed drawers; well built by craftsmen of the period, circa1880.
