Description: Antique 6 1/2" Open-top Pewter Pitcher Applied Handle and Spout By Thomas Danforth Boardman For Your Vintage Pewter Collection-BooardmanPitcher1 Details Description: This is a very nice and unusual antique 6 1/2" open-top pewter pitcher. The pitcher has a round footed base with a rounded belly type shape supporting a flared curved neck ending in a plain rim. The rim has an applied spout. The pitcher has an applied handle starting in the middle of the pitcher and ends at the top rim. The handle has a flat top to rest your thumb and makes it easier to pour. The pitcher is plain and undecorated. The pitcher has the Lion touch, most uncommon, of Thomas Danforth Boardman. This touch (No. 42 in Jacobs Book-See last photo) was used from the 1830s. The pitcher has what one would consider an open top form. This form is shown in Plate LXXIII (photo No. 622) in Laughlin's book "Pewter in America". However, the one shown in Laughlin's book is a Palethorp piece measuring 7 5/8" but of the same shape. Great looking pitcher to add to your collection. Please carefully review the photos presented as they are part and parcel of the description. Date: 1830s-1850 Origin: Hartford Connecticut. Size: Measures ~6 1/2" in height with the base being ~4 1/2" in diameter and the piece is about 8 1/2" at its widest point including the handle and spout. It weighs about one pound and 13 ounces. Maker: Thomas Danforth Boardman. Marks: Marked on the bottom with the image of a lion sitting on his hind leg on a flat base with a tri-lope shape with the word "BOARDMAN" in a curved banner below the lion. See touch no. 42 in Jacob’s book "Guide to American Pewter". Distinguishing Characteristics - Most Interesting About The Piece: A great and rather rare piec of antique pewter that would look great in your collection. Condition: The piece is in fair condition. The spout appears to have been resoldered in part to the rim, the exterior has scratches, dings, and obvious bumps indicative of extensive use in its past life. The inside bottom has scale that is peeling and shows losses indicating that liquid was left in the pitcher and resulted in oxidation of the pewter. The handle is solidly in place but has bands and bumps. The bottom has darkened and was partially cleaned to reveal the mark. The piece has some stains, signs of oxidation, and scratches throughout. Because the piece is not perfect, we are selling it AS IS at a fraction of its true value. We believe the piece can be cleaned and would look very nice once cleaned, but we leave that to the discretion of the new owner. Please see photos for additional condition information and to appreciate the beauty of the piece. Our Guarantee Please view our 100% positive feedback and bid with confidence.
