Description: I was fortunate recently to be able to acquire the professional medal collection of John "Dicky" Cunliffe, most famous for being a key member of the Port Vale team of the 1950s, the most successful team in the club's long history dating back to 1876. During his 9 years with Port Vale between 1950 and 1959, John made 283 League appearances for the club, scoring 52 goals. During that period Port Vale won two Football League Championships, Division Three North in 1953 - 54 & Division Four in 1958 - 59. Both of John's League Championship medals were included in the medal collection along with two later medals he won with Macclesfield Town in the seasons 1960 - 61 & 1961 - 62. I am now putting the medal collection up for sale with this example being: Football League Division Four Championship Medal for the season 1958 - 59. The medal comes complete with its original moulded presentation case in black leatherette, silk & velvet which is gold embossed "THE FOOTBALL LEAGUE". The front of the medal is embossed: "THE FOOTBALL LEAGUE. CHAMPIONS DIVISION 4" The obverse is engraved: "SEASON 1958 - 59 J. CUNLIFFE. PORT VALE" Included with the medal is a photo reprint depicting John Cunliffe from his Port Vale playing days (the original photo was from John's personal photo collection which was included with the medals with the photo collection being listed for sale on eBay separately). Also included is a printout of the Wikipedia page relating to John Cunliffe. 9ct Gold Medal: Weight: 15.5 gm. Diameter: 28 mm. Hall Mark: Birmingham 1958. Maker's Mark: Vaughton & Sons. John "Dicky" Cunliffe (4th February 1930 - 15th November 1975): An English professional footballer playing on the left wing who made 309 appearances in the Football League, scoring 55 goals. John played for Port Vale between 1950 & 1959 where he won two Football League Championships and also reached the semi-final of the FA Cup in 1953 - 54. He was one of the club's star players during the 1950s before joining Stoke City in 1959 where he played 25 League games. In 1960 he joined Macclesfield Town where he stayed until 1963 where he won a Cheshire County League Championship medal and a runners-up medal. Port Vale FC: Founded in 1876, the club holds the record for the most seasons in the English Football League without reaching the top tier. They became founder members of the Football League Division Two in 1892 and during their long stay in the Football League they have won just three Championships with John Cunliffe one of the very few players to have won two Championship medals with the club in 1953 - 54 & 1958 - 59. The other Championship won by Port Vale was the Third Division (North) Championship in 1929 - 30. Port Vale currently compete in the English Football League 2, the 4th tier of the English football league system. Summary: As can be seen from the photos & history (above) this is a rare medal in the history of Port Vale FC, a 1958 - 59 Championship medal won by club legend, John "Dicky" Cunliffe. Good luck! Note: Please see my other listings relating to John Cunliffe; his Port Vale Football League Championship medal from 1953 - 54 & his personal collection of original photographs.
