5 Cents, 1961, Jefferson Nickel, Must Have!

Description: Product InformationThis U.S. nickel coin is also known as a Jefferson nickel. The coin weighs 0.18 oz (5 g) and measures 0.83 inches (21.2 mm) in diameter. The 1961 five-cent piece is not a reserve coin. Rather, it is circulation coinage. Its appearance goes back to a coin design that prevailed during the period before the Second World War. To be more precise, the design of this 1961 five-cent piece originated in the year 1938. The composition of this coin includes significant amounts of both copper and nickel. Thus, this U.S. nickel can be described as a copper-nickel coin. Furthermore, the date marked on the copper-nickel coin is 1961, and the coin was minted at the Denver and Philadelphia sites of the U.S. Mint. This U.S. nickel was perceived as being of low intrinsic value at the time when it was minted. Thus, it was not thought to be necessary to prevent efforts to shave its edges. This is why the coin’s edges are plain. The coin’s obverse shows a portrait of President Thomas Jefferson, while its reverse features his Virginia estate, known as Monticello.
