4 Side Plates “Empress” Blush Sepia Roses & Gold Trim by Winterling of Germany

Description: This is a set of 4 beautiful porcelain 6 inch plates by Winterling of Germany. The pattern is called Empress, named after the Empress Maria Theresa, who ruled the Habsburg dominions (which included Austria, Hungary, Bohemia, Croatia and more) for 40 years starting in 1740, the only woman to be Empress in her own right. The pattern itself is interesting, in that it is decorated in subdued colors, the flowers and roses are in shades of sepia with hints of pink and blue. The porcelain is slightly scalloped with a trim line of shiny gold on the edge. These plates are considered side plates, where during fancy dinners, they would be used to hold a folded napkin, as a bread and butter plate, an hors d’oeurves plate, or for a small treat or desert. They would also have been used during tea time for a treat to go with an afternoon cup of tea. They would be lovely to coordinate with a gold and white tea set or something similar. And the history behind them, the pattern was adapted from a china pattern created for and used by the Empress Maria Theresa. This Winterling backstamp was used from 1950 to 2000, per Worthepoint. Two of the plates have a backstamp, and two do not. This set of 4 plates is in excellent shape with no chips, cracks, or crazing. When holding the plates at an angle to the light, I can see a few faint utensil marks. There is very little, if any wear to the gold trim.
