Nathaniel “Nate” Archibald (September 2, 1948-) was a troubled youth in the South Bronx, honing his skills on the playgrounds rather than a high school basketball court, until community mentors gently prodded him back to school. At 6’1” tall and 150lbs. Archibald was a speedy guard with explosive quickness and versatility. He attended the University of El Paso and was drafted in the second round of the 1970 NBA Draft by the Cincinnati Royals, but was also drafted into the relatively young American Basketball Association by the Texas Chaparrals. Opting for the NBA, Nate “Tiny” Archibald made an immediate impact on the league, leading in free throws in his second, third and fourth years, and in assists and points during his third seasons (1972-73) with the Kansas City Kings. He is the only player in the history of the NBA to win the points and assists titles in the same season. Archibald finished his career with 16,481 points, 2,046 total rebounds and 6,476 assists. Nate Archibald was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 1991. Archibald played 13 seasons in the NBA with the Cincinnati Royals (1970-1972), Kansas City-Omaha/Kansas City Kings (1972-1976), New York Nets (1976-77), Boston Celtics (1978-1983) and the Milwaukee Bucks (1983-84). Hampered by injuries late in his career, Nate’s playing time dwindled and he retired from playing in 1984. He was a six-time All-Star selection (Named the 1981 NBA All-Star Game MVP), a three-time All-NBA First Team player and won an NBA Championship with the Boston Celtics in 1981 alongside the young, future Hall of Famer Larry Bird. Archibald coached in the National Basketball Developmental League in 2001, before taking a position in the NBA’s community relations department. In 1996, Nate Archibald was named to the 50 Greatest Players in NBA History list.
