Description: StLouBrown's Bygone Days "Let Bygones Be back" 1962 publicity photo of the brutal St. Louis Cardinals pitcher Bob Gibson. This photo was received by the sports department of the Freeport (Illinois) Journal-Standard for use in its sports pages. Photo is undated but the same image is displayed on Gibson’s Wikipedia page and it is labeled “1962.” Based on the blue hat, which the Cardinals stopped wearing for road games in 1965 and that the photo appears to have been made at the first Busch Stadium (originally Sportsman’s Park), which was replaced in 1966, it is at least as old as the mid-1960s. Gibson (1935-2020) pitched 17 seasons, all for the Cardinals, a feared fireballer unafraid of brushing back batters who crowded the plate. In an era of great hurlers who would have laughed at pitch counts, Gibson notched 251 victories and was only the second pitcher in history (behind Walter Johnson) to strike out 3,000 batters. He won seven World Series games in a row from 1964 to 1968, was honored with two Cy Young Awards (including in 1968, when he also was named the National League’s Most Valuable Player) and was elected to the Hall of Fame in 1981, his first year of eligibility.
