Description: On auction, we have an original hand colored comic strip of "The Strange World Of Mr. Mum". Here, Mr. Mum and his dog go on a picnic. The black lines on squares, signature and figures appear to be printed. They are boldly filled in with bright colors and notes in the margins. The colors appear to be a mix of felt tip markers and watercolors, maybe gouache. Stamped on the edge is "TM "R" (in a circle) All rights reserved The Hall Syndicate Inc.". The top has "Painted 8/10/60" and the back is stamped "July 22 1960". "9-11" is printed in the next to last square. On paper, this measures 10" X 14". About the artist: "Irving Walter Phillips (1904 – 2000) was a noted American cartoonist, playwright, television scriptwriter, author, illustrator and educator. From 1958 to 1974, Phillips produced his best-known work, The Strange World of Mr. Mum, a pantomime panel which ran in 180 newspapers in 22 countries. Mr. Mum was a portly, bald and bespectacled character, who—as his name suggests—silently observed various odd, surprising or even surreal scenes. He was sometimes accompanied by his similarly silent dog. Mum was described as a "bystander on life's outer limits”. (Wikipedia) I believe this is in good vintage condition. The comic is bright, bold and clear. There are penciled notes and corrections. There are white-out corrections and some of the coloring strayed outside the lines. The paper is very worn on the edges with a tiny hole at the top and several small tears. It has been handled and has many wrinkles. As I am not an expert, please view my photographs for more description. This is from my friend who is moving to a smaller home and parting with some of his treasures.
