Description: These are attractive books. They are in good condition and the spine is attractive with not only the name of the set and the name of the individual volume, but also a design. I took a picture of the opening page of the book so you could see the "flying carpet of knowledge" and the children getting ready to learn. The books also contain many illustrations and photographs to go along with the information. I think books like this were fairly common in many households during this period. This set is the 1953 version of a series which was begun the early 1900s. It is a children's encyclopedia, but not arranged alphabetically, but rather topically. I found both the divisions and the information interesting. I was struck sometimes by how far we have come in the last 70 years and other times I was surprised how we are the same. Volume 1 The Child and his World: four divisions, 1) Character building stories 2) Elementary projects 3) Information on Boys' and Girls' clubs 4) Methods and devices for teaching various subjects. Volume 2 Stories of Science: five divisions, 1) Book of Earth and sky 2) Book of Plants and Animals 3)Book of the Races 4) Book of the Human House 5) Book of Invention and Engineering Volume 3 Great Industries : No divisions, just a listing of 33 various "industries" ranging from Coal to Candy to printing to automobiles to matches to soap. It is almost a 1950s version of the television show "How Do They do That?" Volume 4 Our Country in Romance: four divisions 1) Colonial Development and Independence 2) National Growth to the close of Civil War 3) Reconstruction and Expansion 4) The Story of our Government Volume 5 Around the World: No divisions, just a listing of 56 countries with information about each. Volume 6 Leaders of All Times: Two divisions 1) Epoch Makers of History including founders of religions, "builders" of Florence, and leading American and foreign writers; it is unclear to me what the criteria was used for inclusion into these 145 pages 2) Great Americans which covers about 200 pages. Volume 7 Atlas School Guide Index: Three Divisions 1) General information on the World and Continents 2) Information on the States of the Union 3) Maps of the World which also includes a School guide by grade.
