Morton Ave. The Hercules Buggy Co. factory was built on this location in 1902, remodeled several times, and then reorganized as Servel in 1926. According to the Historic Evansville Indianna website, "An aerial view of the Servel plant stretches out over more than a million and a half square feet. "The name Servel was born in 1923 thanks to a company by the name of National Electric Products Company. Their slogan was Serving Electric, which was soon shortened to Servel. In 1924 a 10-year contract was signed by Hercules to manufacture an ice-making machine. The Servel Corporation was incorporated in Indiana as a sales agency for the ice-making machine. In 1925 Hercules was sold and the name changed to Servel Manufacturing. The new refrigerator made its debut at the American Gas Association convention in Atlantic City in October 1926. Up until1927, the refrigerators were manufactured in Newburgh, NY and the cabinets in Evansville, IN. The units were now called Electrolux units under Electrolux Servel. In January 1928 Electrolux Servel began new operations under the name of Servel, Notes from the Durham Museum collection: Their collection hosts a 1933 Servel Inc. gas powered refrigerator. It is noted it provided a new accessibility to mass consumer goods in the late 1920’s-1940’s. In contrast to Servel’s competitor such as General Electric and Frigidaire, Servel was less widely used. It was the “small fish in a big pond”. They only had 8 to 10 percent of the market. Servel made refrigerators as late as 1956 but was beat out by absorption and compressor refrigerators that rely on heat and then evaporation of refrigerant for cooling.During the 1930’s there were two primary types of refrigeration, gas powered and electric. The gas-powered design marketed to be more fitting of the rural lifestyle because it did not require electricity. The gas refrigerator other than the emissions of burning the gas had a small environmental impact. Electric fridges relied on similar techniques as the gas fridge but used a compressor to do the heating. It also required a refrigerant rather than ammonia gas which in the beginning was less environmental friendly. As urban centers grew the refrigerators become better and by the 1920’s it was an essential piece of kitchen furniture. The gas powered ammonia flame that Servel used, would often times result in firs and high exposure to toxic ammonia. The development of Freon led to a safer smaller, lighter and cheaper refrigerator.
