1928 JEWISH Steering or Drifting - Which? Sermons BY ISRAEL H. LEVINTHAL

Description:   Steering or Drifting - Which? Sermons and Discourses ENGLISH VG CONDITION, HARDCOVER -- 1932 RARE This collection of sermons was delivered from 1922-1928 by Rabbi Israel H.Levinthal an outstanding pulpit orator, and major Jewish religious leader of his day. These primarily High Holiday sermons, are written with elegance and verve. Their message is often illustrated and underlined with Midrashic material. In the title sermon Levinthal outlines two alternate paths of life, one in which we are controlled and driven by appetite and accident, and the second, in which we take command of our lives, and direct them to higher goals. In another High Holiday sermon he considers the Creation of Man, and asks the question of why Adam is not created from the earth of any one land, but rather from earth taken from the four quarters of the earth. His answer is that this is done so that all peoples should share in this creation. Levinthal's message is one of deep faith in Judaism, but not a parochial Judaism, but one which serves and inspires Mankind as a whole. In many of the sermons in which he speaks against assimilation, the loss of the Jewish soul and home, one feels he could be speaking about our present reality. He often speaks of the Jewish people's task in relation to their ancestral homeland, and the need to build the Holy Land through immigration and dedicated work. His hope is that the society which develops there will too be a higher moral society. These sermons I came across in a volume which was owned, and annotated by the late Rabbi Mordechai Singer. Rabbi Singer served congregations for many years in England. He too as I understand it was an eloquent and at times fiery proponent of addressing contemporary issues with the insight and wisdom of traditional Jewish teachings and values.   We have over 500,000 books of Jewish interest in Stock, please make sure to check out our Our eBay Store     Questions, comments, Requests?
