Circular bronze medal, a flat central medallion within a laurel wreath, with laterally pierced loop for ribbon suspension; the face with the head of King Albert in relief facing left, circumscribed ‘ALBERT ROI DES BELGES’ (Albert King of the Belgians), signed ‘G. DEVREESE.’ (for the artist Godefroy Devreese, 1861-1941); the reverse inscribed ‘EN TÉMOIGNAGE DE RECONNAISSANCE NATIONALE’ (In Expression of National Gratitude) and dated ‘1914-1918’ below; on original ribbon with a single central stripe for a charitable and humanitarian award (the ribbon has two stripes for an award for supplying food to occupied Belgium), mounted for wear in the Belgian style.The Medal was instituted on 7 April 1919 to acknowledge outstanding humanitarian service to the civilian population of Belgium during World War I, a time when almost all of the country was under German occupation.
