Edges of pages are gilded. Pages have some age-related toning and light foxing. Some slight tearing to the fold-out map at the beginning of the volume, as pictured. Hinges have some wear closer to the cover boards, but pages remain attached and generally have good support. Illustrations are in good condition and are clear to see. Some fraying to the included ribbon bookmark. Please see photographs and ask any questions prior to purchasing. William McClure Thomson was an American Protestant missionary working in Ottoman Syria. He used his observations as a means to illustrate and illuminate passages from the Bible. Landing in Beirut in February of 1833, he was only the eighth Protestant missionary from the United States to arrive in the area. The Land and The Book gained favor due to it being directed toward the general public, rather than academics or theologians. Beautifully illustrated in very nice Victorian leather binding!
