1865 Confederate General Pierre G. T. Beauregard Document

Description: 1865 Confederate General Pierre T. Beauregard Document Up for auction is a February 13, 1865, period copy of correspondence from General Pierre G.T. Beauregard’s Chief Quartermaster, Major Edward Willis, to Beauregard regarding contracting to pay for government supplies with cotton. General Beauregard, who was commanding the army opposing General Sherman had just left Augusta, GA and arrived in Columbia, SC where the document was sent. Beauregard gave the order for Lt. General Hardee to evacuate Charleston, SC, three days later as General Sherman was marching north and couldn’t be stopped. Beauregard was replaced by General Joseph E. Johnston on February 22 in an effort to stop Sherman. The document is signed by General Beauregard’s AAG, Lt. Col. John M.W. Otey. Ironically, Major Edward Willis became a cotton merchant after the war. What a great piece of Confederate/Civil War memorabilia and an excellent addition to any Civil War collection. Condition (scale 1-10) - 3.5 - Fair, used condition for a 158-year-old document. See pictures for best description – bends, holes, folds, fading, wear, soiling & staining are all possible; and a large tear in bottom right as seen in photos. See photos for condition. Thanks for looking and good luck bidding.
