1864 Confederate Currency - Civil War Bullets - 4067

Description: The original 1864 hand signed “Twenty Dollars” Confederate note has a pink overprint with the center vignette of the State capitol in Nashville. A.H. Stevens is at lower right. This note was printed on pink paper with black ink on the front and blue ink on the back. The note was engraved by “Keatinge & Ball Columbia SC” and has the hand inscribed serial number “25857” in brown ink. There were about 200 different people who signed for each treasury official. For the most part they were women, many the wives or daughters of Confederate soldiers who had been killed in action. The lead bullet at center is a .58 Federal issue for the standard Springfield rifle or other contract arms of that caliber. The fired .58 bullet at left could have been used by either side. The Richmond Arsenal in Virginia was one of the few southern arsenals to issue a two ring bullet, the Gardner. The vast majority of Confederate ammunition was a three ring or the Enfield pattern bullet. After a bullet has been fired it is hard to tell the difference between a Federal or Confederate issue. At right is a Federal issue round for the .56 Spencer Carbine which would have used a brass cartridge. The .58 caliber rounds would have used a paper cartridge. The white patina is due to oxidation in the ground. The lead bullets were excavated from the “Battle of the Wilderness” and the Spotsylvania Battlefield near Fredericksburg, Virginia. The battles, beginning of May in 1864, were the start of General Grant’s “Overland” Campaign to take Richmond. The fighting was almost non stop during May between the two battlefields. They are mounted in an 8” x 12” Riker style case with glass front. The artifacts are just pressed in, we don’t glue them in. All of the artifacts are guaranteed to be original as stated. A hand signed and dated “Certificate of Authenticity” will be issued by Collectors Frame with a photograph and description of the items purchased. The documents pictured will also come with the set. Please see our "About” on front page for more information on the framing and artifacts.
