1838 paper: ST. VINCENT de PAUL; Greenwich Hospital naval art, maritime history

Description: The PENNY MAGAZINE Jan. 6, 1838 St. Vincent de Paul the Painted Hall of Greenwich Hospital This is a paper which is over 180 years old. It is printed in a small format, measuring 7 by 11 in size, and is 8 pages long. The paper came from a bound volume and has typical minor disbinding marks at its spine, but is otherwise in excellent condition. * * * * * * * * * * * * * The lead article is a full 3-page piece on THE NAVAL GALLERY, OR PAINTED HALL, IN GREENWICH HOSPITAL, which features a large engraving on the front page of Interior of the Painted Hall, Greenwich Hospital. This shows a huge art gallery with a very high and ornate ceiling, which was part of a larger space dedicated to displaying the works comprising the Naval Gallery, covering British maritime history. The text is over 325 lines long, and goes into good detail on the artwork, much of it extolling England's naval battles. * * * * * * * * * * * * * In the center of the issues is a 3-page article titled BENEFACTORS OF MANKIND, which starts with a woodcut portrait of ST. VINCENT de ST. PAUL, with a biography of De Paul which is over 300 lines of text. ******************************* Background on this publication: The Penny Magazine was a weekly 8-page paper put out by Londons Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge. Throughout the 1830s, an American edition was very popular in the United States, only to dwindle into extinction during the following decade. The paper did not cover the current news of the day, and carried no advertising. Instead, the Penny Magazine provided excellent essays on a wide array of subjects, such as architecture, science, geography and natural history. The paper was compact in size, and most issues were illustrated with several fine woodcut engravings. 370 [gsp10226] _gsrx_vers_1680 (GS 9.8.3 (1680))
