This is a deciduous Shrub growing to 2.5 m (8.2 ft) tall and broad, it is notable for its leaves turning red in autumn, and its red fruit which splits open to reveal orange seeds. The seeds ripen from September to October . The species is hermaphrodite (has both male and female organs) and is pollinated by Insects. Native to Manchuria and Russian Far East ,Japan, China, Korea, and the Island of Sakhalin (whence the specific epithet sachalinensis). Medicinal use of : None known Edible parts of : Young leaves - boiled. Some caution is advised Known hazards of : Although no records of toxicity have been seen for this species, a number of plants in this genus are suspected of being poisonous and so some caution is advised.
